Check-up time!

I MISS GUILTY GEAR SO DAMN MUCH!

Oh well, I guess I'll use this blog for SSBM and maaaaaaaaybe BB/Halo.

Rather than be all uber "i'm tight" and post super-motivating/insightful things about the games I play, I'll prolly post a lot of my stupid thoughts and notes.

Unless stated, these are for Doc.

when falcon tries to pressure with [jab x 1-2>knee]xN, upb OoS against 1st jab

- Okay, I lied. I'll explain things a little bit further.

One of Falcon's most messed up pressure tools (I feel) is the jab > knee on shield combo. If you try to grab at the wrong time, you WILL get kneed (and not be DIing, likely). It also works pretty effectively vs side-steppers, and good Falcons can normally do it while watching for a roll to stomp/sideb. It's not SUPER easy for Falcons to tech-chase the rolls (unless you're near the edge, d'oh), buuuut, rather than deal with all that, what I've started to do is upb OoS. You have to be careful about being baited (doc's upb is pretty much a shoryuken) but it puts the fear into him when he starts to pressure, which gives you a chance to roll/wd away.

Oh, and don't jump OoS unless you have a retarded fast nair. You're gonna get nailed, and might even accidentally burn your second jump. No bueno.

I think it might also be possible to usmash him OoS, but I haven't tried it yet. I'll prolly try tonight.

-on PS/BF vs Falcon @90+%, uthrow allows for follow-up above the platforms. Uthrow>uair>land>uair/fair?

This is just a general note, and I need to tinker with this idea more, soz it goes in mah blog. Woooooo.

Hrm...

What else?

Nair>utilt = xup shield pressure
nair/empty sh>fsmash/grab = xup shield pressure mixup

Umm...

Well, as a brief explanation, I've played Melee while blazed quite a few times. So some of my notes are a little retarded.

Anyway, crossing up is INCREDIBLY underrated in SSBM. I've noticed that very few non-top level players do it.

For anyone that's new to fighters (or any people that play smash exclusively), crossing up is when you end at the opposite side of the opponent from where you first started. In 2d fighters, xups (i'm getting lazy now) are useful because they force your opponent to change their block (or guess, in the case of ambiguous cross-ups), allowing for a difficult block situation. In the smash series, cross-ups prevent a few things:

1) Sheild grabbing
2) Some traditional OoS counters (I.E. Luigi nair OoS)
3) Retreating via backwards roll

They can't sheild grab because you're behind them. Luigi can't nair OoS because you're too far behind for him to risk it without getting usmashed/tilted (particularly if you did the aerial late). If they try to roll backwards, you can normally reaction dsmash/tech-chase. Worst case scenario, you can normally get a wd ftilt.

Best of all, it puts you at a great position to grab. They're forced to guess between your follow-up being (among many many many options... this is why I love SSBM):

utilt - If you do it early and they try to jump, you just got a sweetspot utilt that leads into whatever
usmash - Also beats jumps. I just started using this move, but it apparently leads into ANYTHING (grab, usmash again, tech-chases, FSMASH). Only problem is, if you guess wrong, they get away, and might even be able to punish you.
fsmash - Risky as hell, but soooooo nice when you land it. Angle the fsmash up if you expect a jump, and down if you're going for a shield pierce.
Nair - Not that great an option (I'd rather use dair for shield drain, or fair to slam a side-step), but it's relatively safe for you. I pretty much never use it
Jab - My favourite option. Tags most jumps, and option selects like madd. After a jab on the opponent's shield, you can just watch and see how they react. If you think they'll keep shielding, grab and enjoy your damage/kill. If you see them roll, cancel it right quick (down near the ending frames) and follow their roll with a sh pill/dsmash/fair/wd ftilt/graaaaaaaaaaab. Sidestepping loses clean to jab>dsmash, too, because of how retardedly fast Doc can recover from it/sidestep/dsmash again/whatever. So you can sometimes spook people by doing jab>dsmash the first time you pressure their shield, and then do jab>grab the second time, if they're the defensive type. Better still is when you "accidentally" land in front of someone with fair, jab, and then they go for the grab that they haven't had a chance to get (CUZ U HAVE BEEN CROSSING THEM UP ALL DAY LONG OMGOMG) only to get jab>dsmashed. Sometimes, they'll try to beat jab>grab with a pre-emptive grab, and dsmash is beautiful for beating that out, too.

No joke, sometimes I'll jab and just crouch right in front of someone. The moment I see that shield drop, there's a dsmash coming out for the clean hit. Nice. I normally have to be under the influence of something to react properly, but scoring that hit is one of the best feelings ever.

There are a billion other things you can do, and some of the examples I've given aren't that hot, but I figure that this is enough to just start out with xup shenanigans.

Dammit, I did that whole "explain things" thing. Whatever. I'm pretty much the best.

First real match. :D

We went to the Springs on Saturday so I could do my challenge on DarkPanzer.

Things were going well up until I realized that I didn't know where my DS was. I ended up getting super stressed out. The only thing that really kept me from being bitchy was my bitchin' new phone, and me attempting to not play on tilt.

Before the match, we went to Waffle House. Outside the car, I was attempting to put on my shoes when Steve decided to take me up on my challenge to take me down and tackled me. Me without shoes+bookbag=low tier in wrestling, and he ended up throwing me to the ground. I brough him down with me, then tried to get him in a cradle hold for teh embarassment, but he just kinda crawled on top of me, wtf? GGs, Steve. Rematch sometime, lolol.

Michelle and some others were kind enough to chip in so that Nite and I could eat. Seriously, I don't care what drama is going on, I like most of the Springs players. Good eatin's, good conversation, and a grueling deathmatch of Rock-Paper-Scissors against Heibrahi (good ol' rock let him down. D: ) all served to lighten my mood considerably, and by the time we started the challenge, I had almost forgotten about my DS.

The first match was close. I was all sorts of nervous and scared, and couldn't do ANYTHING right. Somehow, I won it. The second match, he won, and I almost let it get to me. Then I realized that I was just being stupid, letting myself get worked up for no reason, and started watching how he played. After that, I made a clean sweep ftw. I think he might have taken one more round, but the end result was 5-1, my favour. 6p is sooooooooo gooooooooooood.

I should have videos of my terrible nervous playstyle up soon enough. Once I do, I'll just post them right in this space. :D!

After the matches, he congratulated me, shook hands, pounded, the whole nine. Panzer is hella cool. I really hope he starts to improve, because I'd like a super close match with him in tournament sometime. It'd be great to have a Springs player to rival with.

Shortly after, I went back to looking for my DS, and was unable to find it. I ended up slipping into a psuedo-depression for two days before I realized that my DS has actually been keeping me from doing a lot of things that make me happy, wtf? Still, I really miss it. It was nice for when I didn't feel like doing anything productive, and I REALLY miss my R4 card.

Oh well, such is life.

The ride home was filled with lots of old stories, discussions, and a little shit talk. I ended up going home and sleeping, while Tim and Steve taught Don more about Brawl. Tim says his Wolf is coming along well enough, and that he just needs to start working on learning the game's mechanics. Wooooooo.

Next up on my hitlist is Mini-Matt. He beat me at the RanBat, so I'm a little bit cautious now. Still, I'm determined to win, and I'm not going to do the same stupid crap I did two weeks ago. I want to start challenging the good players as soon as possible, so I'm not going to be playing like an idiot anymore, if I can help it.

I'm sure there's plenty I'm forgetting, but I'm lazy and hungry right now, so whatever. Here's hoping my next update is nothing but good news!

North vs. South Qualifier

As the title suggests, we had the Qualifier tournament for the North vs South crew battles that are coming up next month. Top 5 spots get to rep Northern Colorado. 10 people showed up (woooo).

I ended up having to face my friend's Baiken first round, and he 2-0'ed me. Rather than get SUPER pissed and indignant with him, I congratulated him, went off, and THEN reacted poorly. Still, I didn't just bitch to him all during our match. Small personal victories are still victories.

I really really really need to stop fixating on my damn 632146hs special as a get-out-of-jail-free card, especially since I can't get the motion down when it matters most. I think the block is entirely mental, but because of it, I end up focusing on doing it and nothing but it until I not only execute the motion properly, but hit with it, too.

Huge problem for a lot of players, and I'm fully aware of it. When we miss a motion, we keep doing it until we hit it. It's like we have to reassert our technical dominance in our own minds or something. Really lame, and really stupid.

Props to Jamaal for beating me again, though, and MiniMatt for thinking during our matches. Can't count how many times I was airgrabbed because I jumped predictably. Shoulda been a heat knuckle, but seeing the air-grab was actually more intimidating, and made me keep going in the air in an attempt to grab him back.

All in all, I need to stop playing on tilt, and pay attention to my outlook. I didn't give up during my matches, so at least there's that.

After the tournament, we hit up McDonald's and talked about upcoming tournaments, things all of the fresh blood players need to work on, and random stories from the past. We went back and played GG for a couple more hours, and I managed to take a good chunk of matches from Don and Eric, though I guess it does bear mention that whenever I actually took them outta the rotation, they weren't using their mains. I messed up an IK set-up against Don's ABA, but then just decided to run up and try it anyway. He didn't know Zappa's IK was an unblockable, and I have some pretty nasty ideas for stupid things I can do involving the dog in IK mode now. :D!

Sorry this update is so late. It's been done for about 3 days, I just didn't have time to post it. I'm challenging DarkPanzer this weekend, so I'm really getting excited for it.

Week One, BEGIN!

I've decided to start a journal to record my experiences and travels as I venture into the world of competitive 2D fighters.

Some quick background information:

I'm not completely new to competitive gaming. I've been playing Super Smash Brothers Melee for about... 3 or 4 years. I've placed 2nd Out of State on occasion (though I really should have been 3rd... LoVo too good), and routinely placed 4th for about 2 years in a row at almost every major SSBM tournament in Colorado. I placed 7th once or twice, and 2nd/3rd and handful of times. Taken first on the VERY rare occasion, but it was never my own doing.

I also placed 30somethingish at OC3, a 228 man Melee tournament in Cali. It wasn't my best performance, but the experience really made up for it.

Then, Brawl came out. Being the stupid fanboy I am, I picked up Sonic for about 4 months, before realizing that I REALLY needed a new game to play.

Don't get me wrong, Brawl is decent enough, and if you want a thinking man's game, Brawl is it. However, there is virtually NOTHING to practice. Sooooo, I've started looking into the wonderful world of 2D fighters.

And what a wonderful world it is.

So much hype, so much competition. The numbers aren't as big as Smash, but the people that play seriously REALLY know their stuff.

I've been interested in 3s, CvS2, and GG for a long time now. Sadly, Colorado only really plays GG nowadays, so no Yang/Chun or Rock for me. D: D: D:

Still, GG has Zappa, and that's enough to get me to play any game. Doesn't hurt that Colorado's top player is one super-cool guy.

However, in playing with them, I've noticed that Colorado is significantly lacking in two things:

1) Pride.
2) The ability to think and manipulate.

Now, don't get me wrong. Some of our players can adapt rather well, and have tricked me on numerous occassions. Some of our players get INCREDIBLY fired up. Unfortunately, most of them don't.

I aim to fix this.

I have issued a challenge to the Colorado GG scene. If I can not beat every last one of them in a FT5 before this time next year, I'll be taking everyone I didn't ace out to eat. Or just buy them ice cream. I'm not sure which, yet.

Here's the hitlist:

1st Don
2nd KLT
3rd Dave
4th Eric
5th Markus
6th Halfro
7th Orion
8th Ahmad
9th Angel
10th Michelle
11th True Tech
12th Trapstar
13th Ralph
14th Mini Matt
15th Dark Panzer
16th Pixel
17th Master Trick

As of this post I have already taken Trick off the list, and Pixel may be off this Sunday. Not because I beat them, but because they ducked for two weeks in a row. I only have a year to ace everyone, and I can't spend all my time at the bottom.

Every match will be recorded, and posted on here, if I can. If not, I'll just link to it.

Panzer will probably be the first player I get to actually play.

I'm also planning on going OoS for GG, and possibly ST/SF4 once those come out.

Anyway, the purpose of this blog is to update people on my growth as a player, and maaaaybe even as a person. We'll see about that, though.

Until next time,

mamama
